10 Things You Didn't Know About Socks !
The Human foot is an absolutely amazing "feat" of engineering , design and beauty ! It contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 250,000 sweat glands and over 100 muscles , tendons and ligaments. It supports your whole body weight , propels you at different speeds, trajectories and distances and is delightfully ticklish as a bonus.
This particular foot is my left foot, a real beauty isn't it ?
Anyway, you have two of these amazing devices at the bottom of your legs doing an all round great job for you and how do you protect them ?
You buy the cheapest pack of 3,5 or 12 cotton socks that you can find on eBay and wonder then why you have hot, tired and irritable feet. You are happy to spend €100 on your trainers, shoes, boots but the actual garment that is closest to your feet you try and get away with as chaeap an item as possible. STOP !
To try and dissuade you from this grevious crime here are a 10 facts that you didn't know about socks :
1. Socks got their name from Roman comic actors who wore light garments on their feet called "Soccus".
2. Your feet produce almost half a litre of sweat per day. You'd be sloshing around in your own sweat if it wasn't for fantastic socks.
3. Albert Einstein refused to wear socks. ( He also smoked )
4. In Indiana a male driver over the age of 18 can be arrested for indecency if a female passenger in his car is not wearing socks !
5. Smelly socks are now considered to be a breaktrough in the fight against the spread of malaria in Africa. Smelly socks are placed in containers which attract and kill mosquitoes.
6. The knitting machine was invented in 1589 by the Reverend William Lee who was so infuruiated by the constant clacking of his wife's knitting needles as she knitted socks and by the length of time that she spent knitting that he sought a mechanical , rather than a spiritual, solution.
7. The average household loses approximately €80 worth of socks each year.
8. In Cavan town post office there is a special public notice board where you can offer a small reward for the return of a missing sock.
9. One hundred and fifty million packs of socks are sold each year in the US.
10. Single plain black socks are more likely to go missing than any other colour or patterened sock.
